A predictable mega-trend this year is the booming of the mobile internet, which is to change our life by getting everyone perpetually hooked up. Nokia took the initiative to respond to this trend. In December 2007, it kicked off a Design My Internet Life competition for original designs of internet-accessible cellular phones in China. So far it has attracted more than 200 participants.
The submitted design works feature the convergence of cellular phones with music players, GPS, television, personal computers, handheld game players and so on so forth. For instance, a college student worked out a “folding” solution to the inconvenient small screens of cell phones. When the phone is folded, it functions like any ordinary mobile handset with a medium-sized screen; unfolded, the screen doubles its size and gets easier for eyes for internet surfing. Another design combines the Nokia machine with the stylish elements of Apple’s iPod.
The competition was wrapped up in March 22 and Nokia will announce the winners in the coming April. College students, professors and IT designers are said to be the major contests for the topmost European design tour sponsored by the world’s leading cellular phone manufacturer.
