Olympic venues nearing completion

The design of the 2012 London Olympic Stadium, unveiled late last year, evoked a decidely lukewarm response from most people - while it may be sustainable, it certainly lacks style and any kind of “wow” factor. By contrast, nobody can really argue that the design of the main venues for this year’s Games in Beijing are anything less than stunning. The main structures of the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube are now complete, and work continues round the clock to complete fitting out and beautification.

It was recently announced that the completion date for the Bird’s Nest has been pushed back by a month - work has been delayed by preparations for the opening and closing ceremonies, and it will not be ready until late April. The construction of the Nest, Water Cube and other Olympic venues has been a key part of a multibillion-dollar facelift for Beijing. The focal point for an Olympic Green that also features a modern indoor stadium, state-of-the-art aquatics center, and Olympic Village to house thousands of international athletes, the telegenic Bird’s Nest is likely to take centre stage in Olympic broadcasts shown around the world.

Preparations for August’s Games continue at the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube throughout the night
