The Danish Rail system has plastered Copenhagen’s S-Train system with posters and window clings displaying QR codes that, when scanned, provide commuters with a variety of content on their commute. Mobile phones can become QR-code readers on the go by texting “scan” to 222O. Users then click on the return link to download the scanner software from ScanLife’s EZcode technology and can begin scanning a variety of barcodes.
Advertisers include major media providers and brands, offering commuters entertainment such as the latest news from Politiken newspaper, sports results from sporten.dk, popular YouTube videos, clips from the Discovery Channel, and content from wireless operator TDC. Pepsi is offering vouchers for cans of Pepsi Max in addition to providing information about a summer concert they sponsored. For every code scanned, commuters are entered into a drawing to win free passes. Out of the hundreds of scans each day, the most popular codes are for HTC, Pepsi, and the S-Train.
This is a clever use of QR technology that offers many different sources of information and exclusive content to people in a physical environment where they are open to receiving it. Furthermore, results can be tracked easily, giving the Danish Rail System and advertisers valuable feedback.
