JCPenney Unveils Mobile Coupons

The recession has spurred consumers to find savings wherever they can. Now a new program from JCPenney may bring coupons to their mobile phones. The company has teamed up with Cellfire, a mobile coupon service, to make coupons available for download to smartphones. Salespeople will then be able to scan a QR code directly from a customer’s phone.
Cellfire claims this is one of the first trials of its kind in the US. Though it is only being tested in Houston, Texas currently, JCPenney may expand the program nationwide and incorporate it into its loyalty program if it proves successful.
Though QR codes have existed globally for several years, this is one of the first instances of it being adopted by a major company in the US. It seems that the increase in smartphones has led to experimenting with mobile technology, though it remains to be seen whether this will truly catch on in the future.
