Oktoberfest is an amazing fair, but it is very crowded and the Bavarian dialect can make communication challenging. Thankfully, traditional German engineering and precision were applied to mobile apps that helped visitors make the most of this year’s festival.

The application “Wiesninfo” was developed by Oktoberfest.de, the biggest informational website for Oktoberfest. It includes a newsfeed that informed visitors about the latest events that happened at and around Oktoberfest. Furthermore, it informed visitors about the length of the line in front of the tents and if there were any empty seats left inside. Users could even post every Maß (liter of beer) that they drank with their friends on Facebook.

Another application by Oktoberfest.de was the Promille Rechner. This tool calculated blood alcohol content based on age, gender, weight, and of course, the amount of alcohol consumed. Dictionaries that translate German and English into the Bavarian dialect were also available. An electronic voice could then order beer and food or say other common phrases.

As developing iPhones apps is not that expensive, it is possible to set up applications for local and short-term purposes. The Wiesninfo app and others show that just-in-time information is highly desirable and works well on mobile devices as they are always accessible.
