Nokia researcher shares latest globetrotting exploits

Last night CScout attended a Good Ideas Salon featuring Jan Chipchase, lead design researcher for Nokia. His role is to study and help guide human-centered design by observing how people interact with technology and each other around the globe. And due to the rapid growth of mobile phones, he has more and more places to visit: there are over 4 billion mobile phones in a world of 6.7 billion people.
Chipchase noted some of the latest findings from his excursions, including the continued movement of people from rural areas to urban centers and the “digital divide” between those who constantly record data and those left out. He also discussed how his team’s efforts help guide the company’s development efforts, as well as some of the challenges they face, from legal and ethical dilemmas to logistical and organizational issues. When not globetrotting, he has a private blog, Future Perfect.
