Innovative music applications push the boundaries of the iPhone

In November we started posting on innovative iPhone apps, showcasing an eco-app from Brazil. The ever increasing number of applications rolling out for the iPhone keeps users exploring new ways to use and interface with their handsets. Some apps seem more fun than pragmatic, while others are ground-breaking in their utility, but all continue to affirm that there are no limits to how the iPhone can fit into our daily lives on a moment-to-moment basis.

Cases

Part 2 – December 2008: Music Apps Ocarina and Midomi

Ocarina

Application developers Sonic Mule have unveiled their latest creation, Ocarina. The app allows users to play their iPhones like the flute-like instrument it’s named after. The program is sensitive to the user’s breath, touch, and movements, and there are no pre-recorded riffs, making the phone function just like a real musical instrument. Different modes convert the device to different scales — diatonic, minor, and harmonic — and there’s even a Zeldarian mode that lets players improvise on the theme music from the classic Nintendo game Zelda.

Midomi

Midomi is an application available for the iPhone that allows users to identify a song by humming or singing as much as they remember of a certain melody directly into their phones. The program offers a step beyond the Shazam application, which only recognizes recordings of a certain song. Once the song the user has in his or her head has been identified, Midomi offers links to view videos of the song on YouTube or download options on iTunes.

Trend Impact
The iPhone has certainly become everyone’s new favorite toy, and the deluge of new applications for it continue to keep users addicted to discovering new ways to use their smartphones. Interestingly, apps such as Ocarina and Midomi showcase how applications can break from the norm by using the device inputs in novel ways.
