Trend: The Future of Photo Geotagging

New GPS info processing technology promises to simplify image labeling.

Geotate, a UK-based spinoff of Philips Research, has come up with a solution for geotagging photos that is both quick and energy efficient. Geotate’s approach, called Capture and Process, involves fitting a device to the camera which collects a small amount of information from GPS satellites – this information is then processed and added to photos automatically by computer-based software when images are downloaded from the camera. Previous alternatives to this system were manual annotation, or the time and energy-consuming processors built in to high-end cameras.

Trend potential
While Geotate doesn’t provide any specific hardware, it is now working with personal electronics companies to incorporate the approach in cameras, and expects Capture and Process add-ons for cameras to hit the market by the end of the year.
