Trend: Micro-Businesses Cash In On Childcare

To keep workers happy, even the smallest of businesses are finding ways of incorporating childcare into the office. Although the number of large companies that offer childcare in the office is rising, cost issues have traditionally prevented smaller companies from offering the same perks to employees. However, some innovative businesses are finding their way around the problem, retaining employees or attracting customers by offering affordable childcare solutions.
Cases
Carman’s Fine Foods
It’s well known that the sick children of employees cause absence from work with little or no notice. To tackle this, Australian muesli manufacturer Carman’s Fine Foods has created a low-cost kids’ sick room in a corner of its office, instantly noting the increase in staff working hours.
Cubes & Crayons
Californian business Cubes & Crayons provides office space for self-employed or freelancing parents, attracting them with its offer of all-inclusive, on-site childcare. By creating a community of likeminded people facing similar challenges, the venture gives its customers added value beyond that of its more conventional competitors.
Trend Impact:
As the boundaries between life and work become increasingly blurred, small businesses need to devise methods of offering workers similar perks as those by larger, more affluent corporations. Sharing services with other small businesses or promoting home-made shoestring solutions may provide a way forward.
