Helping us satisfy one of our most basic but often unmet needs, a range of companies understand the profitability of sleep.
Trend Description
Despite being key to wellbeing, less and less of us get the amount or quality of sleep that we need. Estimated to be America’s number 1 health problem, 74% of all Americans do not get enough sleep each night and 51% of adults say they experience sleeplessness at least a few nights each week. By tackling this problem, individuals can improve their health, stress levels and obesity risk, and companies benefit from a more productive, alert workforce. Companies are realising that solving this problem can be very lucrative, offering solutions from 20-minute naps to month-long sleep correction programmes.
Cases
Dr Reza Samvat’s Sleep Retreats, Australia
Dr Reza Samvat has launched the world’s first sleep retreat at the Domain Casuarina Beach Resort in Queensland, Australia. Guests choose to stay from two to 28 days, combining luxury accommodation, one-on-one treatment, gourmet meals, personal health tests, practical workshops and nutritional programs. Rounded off with a program to follow after guests leave the centre, guests can be confident progress towards optimum sleep is being made. Prices range from $1,300 to $13,000USD.
MetroNaps sleep pods and Yelo, New York
Despite its reputation as the city that never sleeps, New York is leading the world in helping people correct sleep deprivation. Designed to be used for 20-40 minutes, MetroNaps’ ergonomic pods have been installed in hospitals, Google’s offices and even the Empire State Building. Pods at Yelo’s New York sleep salon offer a similar experience.
The Sanctuary, London
The Sleep Retreat Room at this women-only spa in London’s Covent Garden is the first spa in the world to make use of Low Frequency Sound Wave Therapy Beds, which emit sound waves to deliver a muscle relief that is gentler and more effective than massage. Users quickly nod off in their tranquil state.
Trend Impact
Expect supply and demand of sleep solutions to increase in urban environments and hardworking cultures around the world. Solutions can focus on the quality and quantity of sleep users get, or both together, perhaps leading to hotels that prioritise sleep, to workshops that help people improve their sleeping skills, or even menus geared to helping us satisfy this fundamental need.
