Trend Description:
By harnessing the power of the sun many otherwise cost- and energy-intensive processes and products can become more easily implimented world-wide, while simultaneously saving energy. Some of these solar products are practical or entertaining, such as the ones introduced in our post about Wearable Solar Technology, while others even have the potential to save lives.
Cases:
Solar Bottle
The Solar Bottle, by Alberto Medo and Francisco Gomez Paz, is a portable water bottle that purifies water using the sun. It utilizes a water treatment methodcalled Solar Disinfection System (SODIS), a simple, environmentally sustainable, low-cost solution for water treatment that uses solar radiation to kill microbes. After being exposed to the sun for full six hours, the bottles, which hold about one gallon of water, destroy the pathogenic micro organisms that cause common but potentially deadly diseases like diarrhea. The Solar bottle already is in use in South America, Africa, and the Asia with promising results.
Portable light

More than 2 billion people in this world do not have access to electric light or power. Portable Light could change this. Portable light uses bright LEDs that are so energy efficient, a single miniature diode powered by small flexible solar panes can produce enough light to read, work, and illuminate small areas at night. Inserted in a pillow sized textile-piece, the solar powered LED light is fully portable and cost-effective to produce. The Portable Light team is also working on other projects, creating and implementing new models for energy-efficient electrical power and lighting.
Trend Impact:
At least one third of the population in developing countries has no access to safe drinking water, which is a serious health hazard. The simple concept of the Solar Water Bottle can change this for many. Both products, the Solar Water Bottle as well as the Portable Light, might also find a market in the camping and outdoors industry.
