Event: Greener Gadgets Conference

Industry leaders, entrepreneurs, journalists and product designers will discuss ways of greening the consumer electronics industry on February 1st in New York.

Event Description:
After the buzz of CES in January, the Greener Gadgets Conference will set a new focus on the consumer electronics industry. As climate change and toxicity issues dominate the public conversation, the industry has already started to address key environmental challenges, designing gadgets with improved energy efficiency, using less toxic materials and offering better recycling options. Also consumers tend to be more aware of environmental issues. The idea of the Greener Gadgets Conference is to introduce green design and technology innovations that will open even new opportunities for business and environment. Topics to be discussed include environmental initiatives from leading consumer electronics companies, such as take-back and recycling programs, new environmentally sensitive materials, and design for sustainability, and innovations in renewable energy technologies.

Green technology display
An adjoining gallery space to the conference will feature a green prototype office developed by leading materials consulting firm Material ConneXion and featuring HP technology. Cell phone leader Nokia will display their latest phone the Evolve, which is manufactured in part with renewable bio-plastics. Some smaller startups will also be showing examples of their products incorporating renewable energy including solar, wind power and kinetic energy.

Design competition
Greener Gadgets and the Industrial Design website Core77 have partnered to create the Greener Gadgets Design Competition. Established design firms, emerging designers, and design students are invited to come up with new and innovative solutions to address the issues of energy, carbon footprint, health and toxicity, new materials, product lifecycle, and social development. The top entries will be showcased live and will be judged by a panel and the audience.

The Greener Gadgets Conference Website features a so called guide presenting a continuously expanded directory of resources for product take-back, recycling, design for sustainabiltiy, materials, energy and other resources. The CSRwire links to articles about greener design projects and ideas.
