Metatrend: Social Networking, Consumer Generated Content

Trend Description
Inspired by Social Networking Sites like MySpace Community Marketing is being taken to a new level. MySpace alone has 60 Million members so far, happily sharing pictures, sound and videos, individual profiles, and friends. Membership numbers on similar sites like Friendster, Facebook, or LinkedIn are spreading virally too. No wonder marketers are stepping into this field to use the already well built network and harvest connections.

Cases:

ShowUsYourCharacter
USA Network has launched a MySpace inspired site called ShowUsYourCharacter. Visitors can not only find out more about their favorite characters from USA shows, but also set up profiles to show their own uniqueness. In a current contest, visitors are encouraged to share their talent through a short video to be shared on the site. Winners will appear on TV, starring in a USA commercial.

MySpace Man
This agency really jumped on the MySpace band wagon. MySpace man simply puts a profile of his customer online or creates one, if needed. The rest is simple as 1,2,3. Marketing messages are sent virally through the friend-lists and network, which are already built up on MySpace.

Trend Impact
In the near future we will surely see many more marketing campaigns inspired by the success of community and social networking sites like MySpace. The big advantage of such campaigns is that the network is already there or easy to build up if you try to start a new community. Your target group will feel involved and actively help to spread the marketing message. Right now the excitement about social networking online is huge. In the future people will become more selective and critical of advertisement. But even then you can be sure, that - if done right - your message will reach the right target group and will spread virally all over the globe.
