Ever more channels are emerging on the Internet which make it possible for individuals to share self-made video files. Due to the growing popularity viewer-created content is not only available online but also broadcasted on satellite TV or cable.
Trend Description:

After the huge success of picture sharing sites and online photo galleries, consumer-created content is starting to move faster and faster. Almost every digital camera has a video function now – and the Web is responding to that development. More and more websites offer viewers the chance to create their own TV or video program. Consumers can choose not only what they watch, they can also create what they watch. Aside from established websites like Google and Yahoo which have started offering VC2 services, there is a huge variety of new broadcasting websites which allow users to upload, share, and watch videos created by themselves and other members. Content providers do not even have to be independent filmmakers anymore, but might be your next door neighbor.

Cases:
You Tube
You Tube allows users to upload, tag and share personal video clips not only on its website but across the Internet on other sites, blogs and through e-mail. Users can also create their personal video network, which only allows friends and family to watch the video content. You Tube was founded by the creators of PayPal.
Current:Current allows users to broadcast personal videos on satellite and cable television. Its slogan is: “Stories from the real world, told by youâ€. Viewer-created content makes up about a third of Current’s program, and the share is growing. Videos can be uploaded by anybody, but only the ones which get the most votes from the Current online community will be shown on TV. A special feature is the online training of how to make TV. Samples of the TV programming can be watched online.
Google Video
Google Video offers a commercial video marketplace. Users can search, browse - and buy. There are CBS primetime hits and classic TV series, all presented commercial-free. Google Video will also feature NBA games from this season and from NBA history. Next to the high-quality content, there is also a platform open for anyone with a video camera to publish their content.
Trend Impact
Content chosen and provided by the consumer might well be the future of Television. TiVo and other DVRs are by now almost a basic feature in any household. Consumers are already used to watching what they want when they want – mostly without commercials. The new technology enables almost everybody to make their own video-content. Consumers want to become more active, and online-sharing sites are a huge success. As our world becomes more global people are looking for ways to share their life, their family videos – and they are also looking for media material about their home country or in their native tongue. The examples above are just a few of the many services which are on the rise.
