D.J.’s have been popping up all over the place – in boutiques, department stores, art galleries, museums, bars, restaurants, and even in restrooms. Some hotels take the new D.J. culture even further and hire their very own hotel D.J. Boutique hotels, especially, are now often defined by the music which spins on the hotel turntable.

One of the first hotel DJs is Stéphane Pompougnac. After playing dance-floor in the clubs of Paris, he started spinning a loungier style at the restaurant of Hôtel Costes – and attracted the attention of famous guests like Robert DeNiro or Madonna. Soon the idea of a compilation CD as a presents for the clients of the hotel was born. By now a number of Hôtel Costes compilations, published by the French label Pschent, sell internationally successful.
Other small boutique hotels, like the Hotel Arena in Amsterdam or the Bauer Hotel in Venice followed the successful example. Today even the big chains sell their own CDs. Fairmont Hotels released a Lounging series, while the W Hotels offer online their own Rhythm and Muse collection or W Hotels Warmth of Cool_Overture alongside discs from the hotels favorite DJs like Moby or Thievery Corporation.

Hi Hotel in nice contacted Eric Morand and Laurent Garnier, founder of the electronic music label F Communications, to design a personal music style. Titled Hi Lives the Hotel now hosts different acts every Friday and Saturday. The partnership is profitable for both sites. And by selling its albums in the hotel F Com is able to reach a crowd which usually would not be interested in electronic music.
The Tribeca Grand as well at the Soho Grand invites DJs on a regular basis. And Lydmar Hotel in Stockholm started to bring music to its guest by hiring its very own music manager.
