Trend: USB Power Gadgets

By now there is almost no little gadget which does not have a version running on USB juice. There are USB-powered flowerpot-speakers and silly desktop-lights, fans for the office and warmers for coffee mugs and baby bottles, air purifiers and massage balls. But now the Japanese company SolidAlliance has developed another gadget we did not even need before USB was invented. Well, who knows?

SolidAlliance hit the market with a Ghost Radar USB memory stick. The ghost detector conveniently just plugs into your notebook. A special sensor on the device detects slight variances in the magnetic field when paranormal activity is supposed to take place. You’ll notice the spooky company when the alarm and light go off.

The same company also invented the sushi thumbdrive, a small portable storage drive disguised as a piece of sushi (US$56 to US$76). There is also a glow in the dark i-Duck. Of course these flash memory technologies all connect with the ubiquitous USB connection.

Other practical devices are the seat warmer which keeps you warm in front of your desktop. There even is a USB-powered noodle strainer. But don’t ask us how you are supposed to use it. The little USB vacuum cleaner seems more useful. The egg-shaped ashtray can cut down smoke and odors. It also monitors one’s smoking habits and predicts when the smoker will die of lung cancer.

And what about a cute and mind-calming USB mini desktop aquarium or the USB alarm clock which allows you to select alarm sounds from your MP3 collection? The possibilities are endless. You just need USB.
